Dear Friends,

Citizen involvement is the key to good governing. I try to keep in touch with you, and keep a good pulse on what is important to people in Charles County. Whether it is meeting you at events throughout the community, speaking to you when you visit in Annapolis, or from your emails and phone calls, I truly appreciate your input. I am especially grateful to the over 150 Charles Countians who took the time to fill out my 2011 Legislative Survey and share it with their friends.

Over the last term, we cut over $5.5 billion in spending and more than 4,000 positions from the state workforce in an effort to balance the budget. This year, we will continue to adjust to this new fiscal reality of lower revenues. By balancing our budget in the short term, and working to reduce our long-term liabilities to ensure a strong fiscal future for our state.

Based on your responses, Charles Countians desire a mix of cuts and new revenues to balance the budget while protecting our core priorities, including public schools, supporting our teachers, and maintaining and expanding health care coverage for all our citizens. As the budget debate intensifies, I will make certain to keep an eye on these key priorities.

Charles Countians also emphasized the importance of moving our economy in the right direction. To stimulate our economy our citizens want the government to streamline bureaucracy, forge public-private partnerships with local businesses and provide more tax incentives and credit programs for local businesses. As a farmer and small business owner, I will continue to fight for small businesses.

Additionally, several survey-takers pointed out that the best way to ensure economic success is to keep our school system as the best in the country, provide affordable higher education and create safe communities throughout the State. I am committed to working with my colleagues to keeping education costs low and our communities safe and secure.

Finally, many of you felt that investing in green infrastructure is important, both for creating jobs in our state and for protecting our environment. Alternative energy sources such as wind and solar dominated the environmental goals of many of the survey-takers. I will continue to sponsor and look for opportunities to grow and create alternative energy sources throughout our state.

I can best serve Charles County when I hear from you about the issues that matter in our community. If you have any thoughts, ideas, questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. Senator Thomas “Mac” Middleton
